Fleas and ticks bring discomfort and disease, highlighting the need for consistent prevention.
Fleas and ticks are external parasites that can cause both external and internal harm. They can cause allergic dermatitis (skin issues) and anemia (blood loss). Prevention is always easier than treatment, so using a preventative is very important, especially in flea-ridden areas.
For fleas, if the infestation is so severe, you can see the fleas jumping and moving around. If it is not severe, you may notice that your dog is restless, or scratching and licking a bit more than normal. Fleas are tiny and blackish in colour. Turn your dog on its back and check the armpits and groin for redness, blood or dirt. You may see red bumps. For ticks, do a thorough body check. Starting at the head, run your hands over your dog’s body, paying attention to areas like under the collar, in and around the ears, under the tail, between the toes, groin and armpits. You are feeling for something the size of a pencil eraser. You may also notice your dog is bothering at a certain spot. If you notice any of these things or suspect your dog may have fleas or ticks, give us a call and we can help you out.
Nobody wants fleas or ticks on their bodies, their pet’s bodies, or in their households. The best way to guarantee that none are going to take up residence in your home is to prevent them in the first place. We have medications that you give to your pet to prevent the fleas and ticks from even wanting to come home with your pet.
Preventive treatment for ticks comes in a chewable tablet form or a topical form. Depending on your lifestyle, we can help you decide what is most suitable for you and your pet.
